A Voice from the Eastern Door
Last Friday the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club held its annual 'End of the Year Bash', carnival style. Many program participants had a great time playing games, getting tattoos, expending energy in the bounce houses and on the water slide, trying to hit the target on the dunk tank and indulging in a little 'carnival' food like cotton candy, popcorn, chicken and snow cones.
"This is our end of the year celebration," commented Kenkiokwine Barnes, an ABGC worker. "It was a great fun day! I was surprised at the big turnout of kids but Mohawk School didn't have school today so that helped. Now we are off for two weeks and we will come back for our summer program."
ABGC runs a summer program for five weeks and can accommodate 120 children ages 6-12 years old. There is already a waiting list forming. These students attend classes in reading, art, music and physical education, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Many volunteers, programs and businesses like Akwesasne ACT NOW, Wholistic Health, 7 Dancers Coalition, ACDP, Traditional Lacrosse, Swamp's Performance, Hill Top and Big E's Chicken all helped make the day possible and a huge success. This event made the kids happy and put a smile on their faces, and that's what it's all about.
