A Voice from the Eastern Door
Typical of the Akwesasne vs. Kahnawake rivalry there were some big hits but there were also some topnotch goaltending on both ends of the floor as the Akwesasne Women Warriors defeated Kahnawake 4-0.
In that past rivalry, local great Bruce Roundpoint was always in the heat of the battle and last weekend his daughter Lindsay Roundpoint also made things happen. She scored the game's first goal as she circled the net from behind, but after hitting the twine she took a hit.
Before that goal, Kahnawake goaltender Raven Beauvais withstood the early attack, turning back shots from the outside as her defense held their ground and kept Akwesasne from getting in close.
The entire game was chippy as Kharlene Garrow knocked her player down with a neutral zone hit and the visitor stayed down for a minute.
Near the end of the first period Garrow had two chances to tie. Her goal was disallowed and a minute later she shot the ball past Beauvais but it bounced on the goal line.
In the second there was no scoring but plenty of hits and great scoring chances.
Halfway into the third Charlene Lazore made it 2-0 on the power play as she blasted one in from the side. Lazore got her second of the game with four minutes left. Dawn Smoke got the ball after a possession and snuck it to Lazore parked alone on top of the crease.
Garrow assisted on Akwesasne's final goal as she did an end to end rush dodging Kahnawake players, finding Cheyenne Lazore in front of the net and scoring up top.
Presley Mitchell got the shutout between the pipes. Their next action is this weekend also on Cornwall Island.
