A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club held their second "Run" after dark. Dubbed the "Glow Run" participants started just after sunset at 8:00pm, decorated and accessorized with glow in the dark sunglasses, hats, and glow sticks, the park was alight with bouncing lights and walkways glowing with candles. It was a magical night watching bouncing lights flow around the park and knowing those are children raising money for the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club. After the ABGC were notified they would be cut $50,000.00 from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the Club set forth a plan to recoup some of those funds ensuring all programs, projects and services continue for every ABGC member regardless of residency.
According to Nikaiataa Skidders, the Glow Run was an easy way for their young members and supporters to raise money; participants would take in some heart healthy action that the entire family could enjoy. Dressed to run, walk or ride in their wagon or stroller, each participant had the entire glow in the dark accessories needed to make the night rock; volunteered DJ music from Kahontiio Terrance, glow in the dark glasses, hats, wrist bands and streamers. The Park's walkways were glowing with white paper bags rolled down and held in place with sand in the bottom and a small glowing light inside. Volunteers had small stations set up along the run to supply the participants with drinks and entertainment. "Toss the Ball" and "Stack the Blocks" games gave the kids and supporters a break and kept them laughing at the same time.
The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club received help from members of the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment to make this event a success. The ABGC will be hosting other fundraisers including their Golf Tournament on August 16.
