A Voice from the Eastern Door

Pets bring so much enjoyment to our lives, but owning a pet is a privilege, not a right, and along with that privilege comes responsibility. Here are some things to keep in mind if you are thinking about getting a pet and how you can become a responsible pet owner.
Select a pet that fits your house and lifestyle.
Only keep the number of pets that you can adequately provide food, water, shelter, healthcare and companionship for.
Recognize that pet ownership requires investment of money and time.
Commit to the pet for a lifetime.
Make sure your pet receives preventative health care such as vaccinations and parasite prevention and also treat any illnesses or injury.
Provide adequate exercise and stimulation.
Don't allow your pet to stray or become feral.
Properly socialize and train your pet.
Limit your pets' reproduction through spay/neuter, containment or managed breeding.
Make sure your pet is properly identified, using identification tags, tattoos or microchips.
Obey all regulations regarding your pet such as leash laws, registration requirement and even noise ordinances because your pet can affect your neighbors.
These are just a few things to keep in mind when getting a pet. If you would like more information on what kind of pet best fits your family, consult your local veterinarian.
