Kanikonhr'i:io i:wa ne Ona':ke is Up and Running

"We are up and running!" Cst. Rob White, creator of Kanikonhr'i:io i:wa ne Ona':ke, said on Tuesday. Kanikonhr'i:io (good minds) i:wa ne Ona':ke (in the canoe) is a non-profit Canoe and Kayak Club, affiliated with Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, that encourages people to get spiritually connected with the waters of Turtle Island in traditional and cultural ways.

Last Thursday, 10 community members got their big canoe training from Paddle Canada. "We exist, we're trained and we can start operating," said White. He hopes in the near future to have a website up and running which will be linked to the AMPS website. There they will announce upcoming events and how you can become a member.

The organization is family-oriented and White hopes to partner with programs within MCA. It aims to bring families together to enjoy the water to combat issues like domestic violence. "We want to use the waters as a healing method, to heal the mind and relieve the stress of hard times," said White. Another goal is to build a good relationship between the police and the community. "Cops are people too. We're human and we're here for the betterment of the community."

The club currently has one 26 1/2 foot canoe and their goal is to get three. They will be out in the community soliciting funds for the club.
