Thompson Trio takes Albany Great Danes to second round of NCAA playoffs

The University at Albany Great Danes, led by the Thompson trio, made it two rounds into the 2014 NCAA lacrosse playoffs. After defeating top-seeded Loyola on May 10, they were eliminated by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, May 17.

They made huge strides with their domination on the NCAA Division I lacrosse field. They were even featured in a March 9 New York Times article titled “In a Native American Sport, a Family’s Giant Leap,” subtitled “College Lacrosse Upended by Albany’s Native American Stars.” It can be read for free at http://www.nytimes.com and search by clicking the box in the upper-lefthand corner.

Miles and Lyle Thompson are finalists for the Tewaaraton Award, and Ty was on the watch list. It is college lacrosse’s equivalent of the Heismann Trophy. The Times article says the honor has never gone to a Native American, one of the Thompsons could be the first.

The winner will be announced on Thursday, May 29 at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
