Katrina Martin, the daughter of Tricia and Jamie Martin of Fort Covington, has been named valedictorian of the Salmon River High School Class of 2014.
Katrina will graduate with an Advanced Regents with Honors diploma and special recognition of mastery in math and science, the school's highest diploma. A well-rounded model student Katrina gives back to the school by spending her study halls volunteering in an elementary special education room. "I love spending time with the kids and it helped me to decide what I want to do in life," commented Katrina. She also volunteers her time to other students as she is a 4-H and Sources of Strength mentor as well as a member of French Club.
Katrina is the president of the SR National Honor Society and has received the Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology, Daughters of the American Revolution Award for the highest overall grade point average in American History, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Award for outstanding achievement in Mathematics and Science and the U.S. Air Force Math and Science Award.
Katrina has taken a rigorous college prep program of advanced placement courses, including honors algebra/trigonometry, advanced placement (AP) history, honors English, AP English, honors chemistry, honors government, college level calculus and economics. She has excelled in all subject areas. Katrina is also a talented vocalist, participating in the chorus and select chorus program since she was in fourth grade.
Ms. Martin plans on attending SUNY Potsdam in the fall where she will pursue an Early Development in Elementary Teaching degree and then a two year Master's program in Special Education.
Becca Leroux, daughter of Lisa Leroux and Matt Leroux of Fort Covington, has been named salutatorian of the Class of 2014.
A member and treasurer of National Honor Society as well as high honor roll, Becca excelled in all her classes. Becca will graduate with an Advanced Regents diploma. She has taken courses such as AP history, honors algebra and geometry, honors English and honors chemistry. Becca has also taken college level courses in Spanish, and history. Becca has spent her senior year in the New Visions Health program which is a demanding medical program. She commits half of her day to senior academics at Salmon River, and the other half to this academically rigorous program that involves a variety of information in the medical field, a psychology class, and a shadowing program.
Becca has received the Bausch & Lomb Science Award for excellence in science and the Student Sage Recognition Nomination for academic excellence, student leadership and community involvement. She has been a valuable player on the girls soccer and hockey teams where she excelled on the field and ice for all her high school years.
Becca plans on attending North Country Community College in the fall in its highly competitive Nursing program.
