A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Tuesday May 13, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service in conjunction with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police held an event to celebrate Police Week. Police week is celebrated nationally in Canada and this year the theme was "Building Community Partnerships." About 15 officers from both departments were on hand for the event and there was something for everyone at the St. Regis Recreation where the event was held. There were power wheels races for the little ones, lacrosse with the police, hamburgers and hot dogs and ACFS brought their mobile unit. There were police cars, boats and even a K9 at the celebration.
About the event, Chief Jerry Swamp said, "We want to show the community we are here to support them and ask them to support us. We can't keep the community safe alone. We have to build partnerships, not only with the community, but with other agencies as well."
It was an excellent turnout as the field was full of lacrosse players and there was a steady stream of kids for power wheels, about which RCMP Cpl. Cynthia Lord would like to thank Iehrakwas Peters for her excellent leadership skills during the Power Wheels Race.
