AKWESASNE – Mr. Daniel Moise "Pops" McDonald, age 78, of 2125 River Road, Sugarbush Island, unexpectedly passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 29, 2014 in the emergency room at Massena Memorial Hospital.
Dan was born February 5, 1936 in Hogansburg, the son of the late John P. and Maryann Jacques McDonald. He attended Mohawk schools in Hogansburg and school in Bombay. On February 23, 1957, he married Loveday A. Gabriel in Oka, Quebec with Rev. Michael Mitchell officiating.
Dan was a laborer with Laborer's Local #322 in Massena for 37 years, having worked at various locations throughout the years. He was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Horseman's Club. Dan was a former member of the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department. He was also active with the pit crew for P.J. Peters racing and enjoyed barbeque chicken cooking, playing bingo, and 4-wheeling. Perhaps Dan's greatest enjoyments were with his horses and the time he worked with them.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Loveday; his three children, Sheila and Glenn Hill of Akwesasne; Daniel Jr. "Alex" and Laura McDonald of Snye; and Betty and Alex Roundpoint of Akwesasne.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Colleen (William), Melissa (Glenn), Glenn (Carrie), Taylor, Louie John, Leighann (Stevie), Danielle (Francis), Jessica (Scott), and Whitney; 15 great grandchildren; his godchildren, Wade James McDonald, Cheryl Darrow, and Jessica Fontaine; 2 sisters-in-law, Agnes McDonald of Oka; and Rita McDonald of Snye; his aunt, Monica Cook of Georgia; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dan was predeceased by two great grandchildren, Kyleigh McDonald on June 7, 2008; Tyrone McDonald on May 8, 2009; and his brothers, Franklin and Wilbur "Mister" McDonald.
Friends may call at his home starting Thursday 5:00 PM until 9:30 AM Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 11:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Anthony Osuji celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Regis, Quebec.
