SNYE- Theodore "Teddy" Mitchell "Taiothorakhe", 83, 1605 River Road, passed away on Friday April 11, 2014, surrounded by his family, at IAK HIH SOH THA Home for the Elderly, SNYE, QE.
Teddy was born December 23, 1930 on St. Regis Island, QE, son of the late Alex and Charlotte Swamp Mitchell. He attended schools on St. Regis Island and Snye, and served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1950, until he was honorably discharged in July, 1953 as a Sergeant. On July 7, 1956 he married Sarah Jackson at the St. Regis Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Jacobs officiating.
Teddy worked for various farms, before receiving his Iron Workers Book Local #440, in 1954. He retired after becoming disabled from a stroke in 1981. He was a member of St. Regis Church, and the Fr. Michael Jacobs Council #10423, 4th Degree K of C, Fort Covington, the Akwesasne Volunteer Fireman, and the Disabled American Veterans.
He always loved to watch his grandchildren play sports. He enjoyed lacrosse and all sports, and watching wrestling. He drove school bus for a while, and enjoyed visiting with his many nieces and nephews. Teddy also enjoyed watching his favorite shows on TV, playing solitaire, and going out to eat with his wife.
Besides his wife, Teddy is survived by his six children, Lori and Luke Lazore, Snye; Raymond and Kathy Mitchell, Fort Covington; Brian and Emmy Mitchell, Snye; Darrin and Donna Mitchell, Snye; Dion Mitchell, Snye; Keon and Marion Mitchell, Snye; and Allen and Chrissy Smoke, Snye; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Mitchell, Snye; 26 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a sister, Florine Morgan, Camden AR; along with many nieces and nephews and numerous godchildren.
Teddy is predeceased by a son, Craig "Pete" Mitchell, March 31, 2014; four sisters, Agnes Lazore, Nora Jacobs, Cecelia Lazore and Mary LaFrance; and five brothers, Joseph, Mose, William, Kenneth and Alfred Mitchell; and grandchildren Sarah Lynn and Richard Morris Mitchell.
Friends called at the family home beginning Sunday, April 13th until a Mass of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the St. Regis Catholic Church, with Rev. Anthony Osuji officiating. Cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make gifts in Teddy's memory may give to the Akwesasne Fire Department or the Activity Fund at Iakhihsohtha.
