A Voice from the Eastern Door

Three Sisters Organize Internet Safety Seminar

The Three Sisters program hosted an Internet Safety Seminar last Thursday night at the Seniors Center. They invited Special Agent Timothy Losito from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to do his presentation on internet safety and cyber bullying. He does the presentation as part of the Homeland Security's Community Outreach. "The goal is to protect the children," Tim said.

Carrie Marlowe of the Three Sisters Program organized the event. She said, "We wanted to do something different. We saw Tim's presentation at the Child Safety Summit but that was just for providers like police officers and teachers. We wanted the community to be able to see his presentation."

Carrie said when it comes to technology, "Our kids are way smarter than us, we need to get the parents up to speed."

Tim does presentations in all the schools in St. Lawrence County and about half in Franklin County including Salmon River. "We try to go to every school in the district. We also present for civic organizations, church groups, really whoever is interested."

His presentation is practical and condensed. "It's real information that really helps people," Tim said. For example, Tim's presentation includes free resources for parents or anyone interested in internet safety. Tim recommends downloading "net nanny" type software and visiting the site netsmartz.org, which is a website by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The site has tons of free information for parents, law enforcement, educators and kids of all ages.
