A Voice from the Eastern Door

Flooding in Northern Franklin and St. Lawrence County

As of 7:30pm on Tuesday evening at least 20 roads in the Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties were closed due to flooding from spring rains and melting snow. The St. Regis, Raquette, Salmon and Grasse River all flooded with their river banks flowing into back yards, side lawns, pastures, and school yards. St. Lawrence County Emergency Services reported closing at least 5 roads due to flooding and unsafe crossings. CR 53, RT 420, CR 49, CR 15 and State Highway 58 all had partial closing re-routing people on their way home from work.

Franklin County Emergency Services closed a number of streets in Malone, Duane, Bombay, Tupper Lake, Bloomingdale, as well as portions of CR 41 and CR 14. Akwesasne had a number of streets that were closed including Church Street in front of the St. Regis Mohawk School where areas of the their garage was flooded with the road being closed off to vehicular traffic. As the evening wore on the flooding increased. Other streets experiencing flooding were McNeil, River Rd, Gray Rd, North Mill and Pearl St.

As a safety rule, you should never cross a flooded road, you can never estimate the force and power of the water, nor can you gauge how deep the water is. In severe flooding, the water flow may be powerful enough to carry your vehicle off the road.

Governor Cuomo declared a State of Emergency in counties affected by flooding due to heavy rainfall combined with melting snow runoff. The State of Emergency covers Essex, Franklin, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
