A Voice from the Eastern Door

Fort Covington Flooding

These pictures show just some of the flooding and ice that has caused, and will surely continue to cause, massive damage in Fort Covington.

One Fort Covington resident said, "I have lived here many years and have never seen anything like this. The damage to homes and property, the many hours of repair and clean up, and the money spent by the people every year is outrageous. When we had the dam, we had high water in the spring, but not like this. I always had a dry cellar and never even needed a sump pump. Not to mention the firemen up all night and back here early this morning to pump out again."

Some residents believe the removal of the dam is responsible for the conditions, and hold the town board responsible because of their decision to remove the dam.

The resident continued, "All since our town board thought it was a good idea to remove the dam! It is time for them to put their collective heads together and come up with a solution before someone is swept down the river along with people's porches and trees."

Another Fort Covington resident said, "Last night was the worst I've ever seen. The force was so hard that it pushed 4 feet of water in our 6 foot basement, it blew a wall right out! The town has shut off our water. We need a new water heater and our new water softener is ruined."

Many residents were walking around town looking at the power of mother nature, and many claim the same thing, they have never seen it like this. One resident, at 71 years old, said they have never seen it this bad. Another said that some flooding is normal, and it happens just about every year, but they have never seen ice like this. Many Fort Covington residents had to be evacuated.
