Akwesasne Coalition Hosts Girls Night Out

The single goal of the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment is to provide the youth of Akwesasne alcohol and drug free events, and for 30 young girls ages 8 to 13, the Coalition outdid themselves. The Girls Night Out has been providing young girls of Akwesasne an evening full of fun and important information to help them navigate today's pressure filled days at school, at their friends and sometimes even at home, for at least 20 years. This year Coalition members reminisced with their young protégés on how they once participated in the Girls Night Out, and now are leading the evening with activities to help them make good decisions.

The evening started with introductions and making individual and personalized water mugs. This was followed by several activities to help the young girls become more aware of their actions, how they make decisions, and the affects of drugs and alcohol and its possible and potentially devastating addiction. Two of the most powerful activities were the affects of addiction and a graphic look of three people who are addicts; two to drugs and an alcoholic. All of this was made possible by the make-up artistry of Kirsten Thompson. She transformed three upstanding, respectable, and hardworking women into three visually shocking addicts.

The night was rounded out by make your own sundaes and freshly popped popcorn. The last activity was to make a "vision board" of who you are and who you want to become by cutting out print and photos from magazines. By evening the girls were ready for sleep and in the morning they cleaned up, ate breakfast and took away with them a set of life tools they can use for the rest of their lives.
