Abandoned Vehicle - On March 8th, 2014, at approximately 7:55 a.m., Akwesasne Central Dispatch received a call of a burning motor vehicle. The vehicle was on the ice at the southeast end of Cornwall Island in the St. Lawrence River shipping lane.
Upon arrival it was determined that no one was present. A decision was made to recover the vehicle since it was in the shipping lane and posed an environmental hazard if left to fall through the ice. Plastics, toxic battery acids, gasoline, fluids, oil, the battery, and other products stay in the water if a vehicle is left.
The registered owner of the vehicle was contacted. The investigation is ongoing.
