A Voice from the Eastern Door

Four SRMS Students Chosen for All County

On Saturday February 8th four girls from the St. Regis Mohawk School travelled to the Malone Middle School to perform in the Franklin All County Music Festival. Tanyr Laffin, Ienonkwahawis, Sophia Mitchell and Hattie Laffin-Almond are all in 5th grade at SRMS and are in band and chorus. In order to go to the festival, students must be selected by their music teachers, and Mr. Justin Hahn said this is a special group. They are selected on their behavior, and singing and music reading abilities.

They sang in the Treble Chorus, a select group of 5th, 6th, and 7th graders from Franklin County schools. On Friday February 7th, the girls went to Malone and practiced all day. They also went to Malone early Saturday morning and practiced before the concert as the Treble Chorus only had the two days to learn the songs. They even had to learn some dance moves. They sang, "Touch the Sky," "Shake Them 'Simmons Down," "Jabberwocky" and "Evening Prayer." Look for these four girls and the St. Regis Mohawk Elementary Band and Chorus who plan on making another tour of Akwesasne in the spring.
