Boys Basketball
Josh Hynes scored the game high 21 points as Salmon River High School's boys basketball team pulled away for a 60-49 victory at home against Canton last Friday night in Central Division action.
The Shamrocks honored Hynes and four other seniors before the game before ending their high school basketball career on a high note. Graduating seniors are Alex Paulino, Justin Bigness, Austin Leduc, Kason Tarbell and Josh Hynes.
The first half was a back and forth battle with the Shamrocks leading by one at the end of the first. At half time the score was knotted at 20-20.
A great defense and a huge barrage by Hynes propelled the Shamrocks to a 25-17 fourth quarter run to claim the victory.
Hynes paced the Shamrocks with 21 points including three three-pointers. Antoine Domino tossed through 17 with six steals and six assists. Kason Tarbell added eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Russ Oakes netted seven while Brandon Burdash added four. Zach Smith chipped in two points and Jordon Wood rounded out the scoring with one.
Louden Porter led the Golden Bears with 19 points while teammate Mike Couglar added six. Tom Christy, Scott Wight, Ryan Caldwell and Evan LaPoint each generated four points.
Boys Hockey
Last Thursday's game was a special night as it was senior night, signaling the last home game of the season, and there a was a ceremony for former Shamrock Cody O'Connor .
The Salmon River Varsity Hockey squad honored 10 graduating seniors. The seniors are Dennis Bero, Austin Leroux, Tye Terrance, Ronnie Boots, Kyle Lewis, Nathan Smoke, Kassidy LaFrance, Aiden Comins, Austin Comins and Tylar Thomas.
There was also a ceremonial puck drop by the family of Cody O'Connor. Cody played for the Shamrocks from 2004-2009 and helped Salmon River win the 2009 Section X Championship. He died in August of 2012. Coaches Tim Cook and Bill Plante presented his family with Cody's jersey.
Potsdam's Corson Green put Potsdam on the scoreboard first and continued to score three more goals during the game. One more in the first, one in the second and an empty net goal with 1:07 left in regulation time. Logan Ford added a goal and an assist for the 5-1 Sandstoner victory.
Sean David scored the only goal for the Shamrocks at the 4:16 mark in the third period with assists going to Trenton Tarbell and Tyren Boots.
Aiden Comins (10 saves) and Jarrad Jackson (13 saves) shared goaltending duties for Salmon River while Zach Bolt stopped 29 shots for the Sandstoners.
"The outcome of the game was not like we had hoped for," commented Coach Tim Cook. "I appreciate the efforts of all our seniors and I feel that they have done a lot for the Salmon River program. They all will be missed."
Girls Basketball
The Lady Shamrock seniors played one more game against St. Lawrence in front of their home crowd on Monday February 3rd. Five seniors, Jaiden Mitchell, Jocelynn Martin, Kaylin Oakes, Kwiio King, Taylor Francis and their parents were honored and thanked for their hard work and dedication to the Salmon River girls basketball program.
The Lady Shamrocks came out rocking and played a seesaw first half with the Lady Larries. Salmon River took a two point lead at the end of the first when Taylor Francis made a half court basket right at the buzzer to go ahead 14-12. The Shamrocks led 26-24 at the half.
The Lady Larries rallied in the second half to pull ahead 26 points and held Salmon River to just 16 points to give SLC the 49-42 victory.
Jaiden Mitchell led the Lady Shamrocks with 12 points that included a pair of three-pointers, she also had six assists and four steals. Teammate Kwiio King followed with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Francis added eight points (1 three-pointer), four assists and pulled down 11 balls. Jocelynn Martin finished with six points while Britanny Brooks tallied four points (1 three-pointer), six rebounds and two steals.
Bailee Gauthier had a game high 17 points for the Larries. Lindsey Thayer netted 10 points while Morgan Greer and Chelsea Savage tossed in seven points each. Breanna Evans and Jenna Kesner each chipped in four points.
"I was pleased with our intensity. We just had trouble finishing," commented Coach Karen Francis.
