Massena Girls' Basketball Nets Wins Over Gouverneur, Salmon River

MASSENA -- The Lady Raiders varsity basketball squad added two wins to their record against the Lady Shamrocks and Wildcats.

Their first of the two victories came on Monday, Jan. 13 at home against Gouverneur. The contest was a close one, with a final score a 39 – 32.

Massena started the bout with a 10 – 7 lead at the end of the first quarter. They maintained a narrow lead at the half, 13 – 12. This is despite being outscored 5 – 3 in the second quarter. The Lady Raiders regained their offensive dominance in the latter half, outscoring 14 – 10 in the third stanza and 12 – 10 in the fourth.

Samantha Villnave was the high scorer for Massena, ending with a double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds. She also tallied three blocks and three steals. Jessica Rode grabbed 11 caroms and contributed six points, along with two assists and a steal. Jaylee Jones garnered seven points, seven boards, three steals and an assist. Stephanie McKeel pulled down seven caroms, along with two points and three assists. Maeve Curran contributed four points, two rebounds, two steals and blocked one shot. Sophia Rusaw and Robin Boudreau each added six points and two rebounds. Devin Kelly pitched in three assists, stole the ball once and took five rebounds.

On the Gouverneur side, Rebecca Bulsiewicz was the top point-getter with 10. She also tallied three boards, two steals and an assist. Alisha Way contributed six points, six caroms, two steals and a block. Danielle Bullock ended with six points, five rebounds and two assists. Emily Bush added three points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Haley Easton scored five points, had two boards, an assist and a steal. Jessica Rotundo garnered two points, a rebound and three steals.

The Lady Raiders now stand at 5 – 7 in fourth place in the NAC central division. They will next face the Canton Golden Bears at home, Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 25 they will play the St. Lawrence Central Larries in Brasher Falls.
