The Massena Lady Raiders hockey contingent lifted themselves to an 11 – 2 record with wins against the Saranac Lake Red Storm and the Potsdam Sandstoners. On Wednesday, Jan. 15, they shut out Saranac Lake 8 – 0. Katie MacCuaig led the charge with two goals and an assist. K.C. Herne, Maya Swamp, Amber Thomas and Bailey Dillabough contributed two assists each.
Netminding detail for Massena was split by Maddi Dillabough, who stopped seven shots and Kyrsten Stone, who made four saves. The Red Storm used two goalies as well. Arianna Patraw kept 42 pucks at bay, Lindsay Reeve stopped nine.
The only goal the Raiders needed came at 4:56 from Maddi Mailhot, assisted by Herne. MacCuaig followed just over seven minutes later, on a play set up by Swamp and Thomas. They doubled their lead in the middle marker. Molly O'Connell scored at 9:10 from Bailey Dillabough and Raechel Davis. Thomas came in at 13:01, with an assist from Swamp. The closing stanza saw the Raiders once again double their lead. Bailey Thomas took a high slapshot from about 15 feet out, besting Patraw at 1:14. Abbie Paquin brought Massena to a 6 – 0 lead 5:30 later. She was assisted by MacCuaig and Herne. MacCuaig's second goal of the night came at 7:40, unassisted. After two foiled shots, she rebounded the puck and flipped it into the net over the goalie's glove side. The Raider's final marker came from Davis with less than two minutes to go. She coasted a low and slow shot past an unaware netminder Reeve on the glove side. Davis was assisted by Bailey Dillabough and Amber Thomas.
The Jan. 15 contest was also a fundraiser for Coaches vs. Cancer 2014. All of the evening's proceeds went to benefit cancer research and awareness. The Massena squad wore pink jerseys and leggings, and used pink tape on their sticks. They also decked out the arena in the hue.
Michelle Stone, whose daughter Kyrsten plays on the team, said all the coaches at Massena Central got together to see which team can raise the most cash for the cause. She said it is their second year participating.
"Girls hockey raised the most last year," she said.
On Friday, Jan. 17 the Lady Raiders took a 2 – 1 win over the Potsdam Sandstoners.
The game opened with no scoring in the first period. Maddy Mailhot broke the stalemate 8:43 into the middle stanza with an assist from K.C. Herne.
Kalie Grant tied the contest less than two minutes into the third period on a penalty shot.
Katie MacCuaig won the game for Massena with less than five minutes to go on a powerplay. She capitalized on a play set up by Bailey Thomas.
Maddi Dillabough kept 36 shots out of the Raider net, Sidney Molnar made 16 saves for Potsdam.
The Lady Raiders hold third place in their division with a 12 – 2 record. They will face the Potsdam Sandstoners in Potsdam on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. They will host Bellows Free Academy for an 11:45 a.m. scrimmage on Saturday, Jan. 15.
Massena's boys hockey contingent also took a win from Potsdam, on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Corson Green notched the first marker 3:01 into the game, assisted by Logan Ford. Just under seven minutes later, Red Raider Wyatt Wilmhurst scored a tying goal on a pass from Patrick Manning and Jon Paul Chauvin.
Jordan Robert brought Massena into the lead 1:18 into the middle stanza. Manning assisted. Manning fired what would prove to be the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the third period, unassisted on a power play.
Potsdam brought themselves to within one goal of victory at 2:57. They were unable to advance any further, and Evan Kassion scored an insurance goal at 13:15, with an assist from Maddox Merry. Robert put the final nail in the Sandstoner coffin with less than 30 seconds on the clock, an empty-netter.
Connor Paquin worked the Massena crease for 24 saves, Zach Bolt stopped 31 pucks for Potsdam.
The Massena hockey boys now hold first place in Division I with a 9 – 4 record. They face the Norwood-Norfolk Flyers on Saturday, Jan. 25.
