Wolves Snap Vikings'10-Game Winning Streak

The Akwesasne Wolves handed the Casselman Vikings their first loss in 10 games on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Anowarakowa Arena. The Vikings have only fallen four times this season, with two of their defeats at the hands of the Akwesasne contingent. Akwesasne stands in third place in the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s St. Lawrence Division. They hold a 17 – 13 record and 35 points. The fourth-place Winchester Hawks are one point behind the Wolves. They have a 16 – 10 record.

The Wolves jumped onto the ice with an early 3 – 0 lead. The first goal would go to Alex Conroy Terrance just 42 seconds in, with an assist from Harrison Jacobs. After nearly 11 scoreless minutes, Stevie Ray Adams would send a pass from Hayden Mancini into the Casselman net. Oakley Thomas followed suit with less than two minutes to go in the stanza. He was loaned a hand by squadmates Dom Coyle and Teilen Celentano.

The middle period saw Casselman start to get on their feet. Gabriel Laurin put the Vikings on the board at 3:47. Thierry Henry and Kevin Giroux assisted. Akwesasne’s Derek Dione would answer about 12 minutes later. He would tally what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 12:57, assists coming from Jacob Swamp and Celentano. Mark Hough responded for Casselman about five minutes later. He capitalized on a play set up by Taylor Widenmaier and Simon Cousineau. Viking Luc Forget closed the scoreboard at 1:35, assisted by Henry and Widenmaier, leaving the final score at Akwesasne 4 Casselman 3.

Wolves’ netminder Cam Turcotte kept 41 shots at bay. Vikings goalie Gianmarco De Meis made 27 saves.

The Wolves spent 27 minutes in the sin bin on eight calls, Hayden Mancini was ejected from the game for a first-period elbowing call. Casselman was cited 14 minutes on seven infractions.

The Wolves next face the Alexandria Glens at Anowarakowa Arena, 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.
