A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Wolves Junior B hockey squad took back-to-back home wins over the weekend, bringing their record back to an even 13 – 13.
Saturday, Dec. 14 saw the Wolves shut out the Winchester Hawks.
Following a stalemate first period, Alex Conroy Terrance took a pass from Stevie Ray Adams for the only goal his team would need at 7:34 into the middle stanza. A little more than seven minutes later, Derik Dione raised the team to a 2 – 0 lead, assisted by Adam Bomberry and Zack Seguin.
The closing period brought Akwesasne two more insurance goals, the first from the stick of Dom Coyle assisted by Brock Daze at 12:19. The final goal came from Hiio Herne, with an assist from Adams, his second of the night.
The game got rough, with the Wolves spending 23 minutes in the penalty box and the Hawks 21. Neither team was able to capitalize on a combined total of 11 power plays.
Akwesasne goalie Cam Turcotte added 37 saves and a shutout to his record, Winchester’s Brandon Lowry stopped 30 pucks.
Sunday, Dec. 15 saw the Wolves come back from an early deficit to take a 3 – 2 win over the Morrisburg Lions.
Drew Veenstra opened the scoreboard, scoring a goal for the Lions 6:20 into the game with assists from Christian Leger and Chris Pearson. Their squadmate Eric Evans brought them to a two-goal lead 42 seconds into period number two, on a play set up by Michael Paquette and Kieran Devine.
The rest of the game was all Akwesasne, with Dom Coyle, Stevie Ray Adams, Hiio Herne and Hayden Mancini leading the comeback charge.
Coyle brought in the Wolves’ first marker at 9:51, Adams and Herne assisted. The next goal came from Mancini on a power play about nine minutes later, also assisted by Adams and Herne. After a tense half hour of ice time with just 17 seconds left in the game, Coyle fired the game-winning goal with assists from Mancini and Adams.
The Wolves played one of their cleaner games of the season, drawing only a single two-minute penalty. The Hawks were cited six minutes.
Cory Garrow backed the winning effort in the Akwesasne net, keeping 21 shots at bay. John Gilmer stopped 29 pucks for the Lions.
The Wolves next face the Alexandria Glens in Glengarry on Friday, Dec. 20. They follow the contest with a home bout against the Char-Lan Rebels on Sunday, Dec. 22.
So far this season, the Wolves have met the Glens three times and won twice. They have faced the Rebels three times as well, claiming one victory.
