A Voice from the Eastern Door

Akwesasne Child and Family Services would like to extend a huge Niawen:kowa to the community of Akwesasne. On November 20th the community gathered together at the Kana:takon School to celebrate our children in recognition of National Childs Day. Our Childrens' ComiCon event was a success. Our agency enjoyed seeing all the children dressed up and participating in all the events. One of the events developed for this day was run by Kim Herne, she implemented a Comic Strip contest. We asked the children to be creative and draw a non-violent cartoon strip, simply using their imagination and artistic talents. We had over 80 participants for this contest. It certainly made it difficult on the judges but nonetheless, the winners were chosen on technique, positive message, creativity and imagination. The judges chose three top winners along with four honorable mentions.
Top three winners:
1st Place: Stanley Cook Jr.
2nd Place: Lakota White
3rd Place: Nakia Thomas
Four Honorable Mentions:
Margaret Lazore
Cameron Loran
Raniehtenhawi Benedict
Emily Lazore
We would like to thank the St. Regis Recreation for sponsoring the fabulous prizes for this event and to the six judges for taking the time to come out and meet this challenge. We were so honored and proud to see so many children share their artistic talents and we encourage each and every one of you to keep up the good work and keep drawing.
