Akwesasne Wolves Take OT Victory, Even their Record to 10 – 10

The Akwesasne Wolves won a hard-fought victory over the Casselman Vikings on Sunday, Nov. 24 on their home ice at Anowarakowa Arena, thanks to an overtime goal by Stevie Ray Adams. The win brings their record to 10 – 10.

The first period closed at a tie, with matching goals from Casselman’s Joel Adam, who put his team at a 1 – 0 lead just 16 seconds in. Akwesasne’s Hayden Mancini scored his first of two markers 15 minutes later after being set up by squadmate Tye Terrance.

The period saw the Wolves spend a combined total of 18 minutes in the penalty box, the Vikings spent 14, including 10-minute misconducts to Viking Maxime Choquette and the Wolves’ Adams. By the end of the game, 107 penalty minutes would be cited.

The second period ended with a tied scoreboard, but the play got even more intense, with a combined total of 71 penalty minutes being doled out; Casselman skaters spent 35 minutes in the sin bin, Akwesasne players were cited for a total of 36 minutes. That included a game misconduct for Casselman’s Yannik Bertrand at 4:09 and Akwesasne’s Alex Conroy Terrance at 18:29 for fighting.

The middle stanza saw the Vikings’ Thierry Gibeault capitalize on a play set up by Joel Adam to bring their team to a 2 – 1 lead less then five minutes in. The Wolves’ Oakley Thomas, who notched two goals on the night, and Mancini scored back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart with respective assists from Tye Terrance and Alex Conroy Terrance. Martin Forget of the Cassleman contingent evened the scoreboard with less than seven minutes to go, assisted by Sebastien Plante and Henry, leaving the score at 3 – all.

The third period saw the goals pick up and the penalties tone down, with each side being called for two minutes each at 10:29 for slashing. At 2:35, Casselman’s Gibeault took a pass from Choquette and Adam for his second and final goal of the day. The Wolves answered with consecutive goals from Derek Lister, assisted by Harrison Jacobs and Brock Daze, and Oakley Thomas, with assists from Adams and Brett Ourderkirk. The two sides traded goals, with Casselman’s Taylor Widenmaier answering, followed by a marker from Akwesasne’s Ourderkirk, followed by another tilt from Widenmaier. Ourderkirk was assisted by Adams; Widenmaier’s second goal came with a hand from Kevin Giroux and Devin Desnoyers.

After 2:32 of penalty-free overtime, Adams bested Viking netminder Philippe Quesnell, giving his team a 7 – 6 victory.

Thus far this season, the Wolves are doing better at home than on the road. Their home record stands at 6 – 3, compared to 4 – 8 away.
