A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Thursday night, the Middle School gym at Salmon River was home to the STEM Greek Fest. There were several vendors selling goodies and lots of student display booths themed around ancient Greece.
STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and this is the first year Salmon River has implemented the curriculum. There are seven teachers involved with this program, which is project-based and cross-curricular. The program promotes collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. The program gets support from SUNY Potsdam's Kathy Hughes through the Teacher and Leader Quality Partnership Program and the teachers are very grateful for all her hard work. Kathy attended the event and said, "The teachers put in a lot of extra hours. It's a whole new teaching system and I supported them in that endeavor. It's wonderful to see just how engaged the students are. They are excited and proud, that's what it's all about."
Mr. Barclay, a STEM teacher, said the kids planned this event in just 10 days. He said the STEM program is about self-directed learning, the teachers just facilitate. There's a lot of technical jargon that goes along with explaining the STEM curriculum, but Mr. Barclay said bottom line, "the kids are having a blast and they're learning."
The festival included two Greek plays "Persophone and Demeter" and "Echo and Narcissus," both performed by students, and a fashion show also with student models.
