A Voice from the Eastern Door

Kawehnoke Recreation Holds Spirit of Christmas - Part 1

The weather outside turned frightful but no one attending the ‘Spirit of Christmas’ event hosted by the Kawehnoke Recreation committee was intimidated by this. Visitors to the recreation center were treated to a wide variety of items from local craftspeople on Saturday and Sunday. Beaded items, one-of-a-kind Christmas decorations, leatherwork, mitts, raffles for medical expenses, jewelry, moccasins, baked goods and fine art were displayed on vendors’ tables. Some vendors stayed for the one day while other’s brought new items for the table on their second day.

There was plenty of laughter, conversation and hot food to keep everyone warm and cozy from 10am to 5pm both days. Besides the craft vendors, the personalized donations made from the heart and ‘In Memory Of’ past family members was the real draw for shoppers. A total of 31 donations were made to the fundraiser. Some in the form of holiday wreaths decorated with a theme or a ‘collection’ of items to reflect the personality of the loved one being lovingly remembered. The purchase of tickets also included a chance at a door prize.

During his visit, Larry ‘The Eagle’ Edwards provided a spontaneous ‘on-air’ remote broadcast on CKON and encouraged ‘folks’ to stop in, try a bowl of corn soup, visit with friends and neighbors and do some Christmas shopping!

“For the first time, Sunday was the busier day of the weekend. Usually, it can be a very slow day,” commented Gloria Thompson. “We also had a record number of donated Christmas wreaths and gift items to the raffle this year.”

“The Spirit of Christmas” was the prominent theme at the Recreation this past weekend and it showed everywhere you looked.
