MURIEL G. GRAY - "Beedy"

AKWESASNE - Muriel Gertrude "Beedy" Gray, 69, of 43B Oakes Road, Akwesasne, passed away peacefully in her sleep, at home, after fighting a battle with pancreatic cancer on Friday November 15, 2013.

Beedy was born October 13, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Louise Martin Serra.

Beedy attended the High School of Art and design in New York City and attended Glendale Community College earning a BA in English.  She married George G. Gray on April 22, 1962 that ended in divorce.

Beedy worked in the early 70's with schools doing informative lectures concerning the animals of the Hudson Valley, New York.  She worked as an editor for the local chapter of Audubon's newsletter producing illustrations and quality articles.  She also worked selling advertising specialties.

Beedy was famous for her love and compassion for animals, taking in numerous rescues, finding homes for them, and paying out of her own pocket to provide lifesaving medical treatments for the animals of Akwesasne.  She believed that all of the Creator's creatures had a right to be loved and healthy. She was an artist and loved to paint using multiple mediums on paper, leather, barn siding, fungi, and especially on driftwood. She enjoyed photography, nature, birding, and gardening.

She is survived by her two children: Dr. Barbara Gray of Akwesasne, NY, John and Meggan Gray of Phoenix, Arizona, and a chosen son Terri Chris John and Crystal Henry of Akwesasne.   Also, surviving is a grandson Johnathan Sawatis Benton Gray.

Beedy is also survived by a sister and a brother; Barbara and John Kopp of Saranac, NY; and James and Sharon Serra. She is survived by three nieces and two nephews. She is also survived by many cousins.

Beedy was predeceased by her mother in March, 1983, her stepfather Joseph Serra in October 1996. Also, by her brother Robert W. Serra in November 2011.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to defray burial costs.  There will be no viewing hours the family will hold a private burial of the remains at a later date.
