MARGARET RANSOM

AKWESASNE – Mrs. Margaret Tekawonake Lazore Ransom, age 93, of Leo Swamp Road, peacefully passed away Tuesday evening, November 19, 2013 at her home with her loving family by her side.

Margaret was born January 18, 1920 on Christi Island, Quebec, the daughter of the late Martin and Christie Peters Lazore and a member of the Snipe Clan. She attended the Hogansburg Convent School. On September 26, 1939, she married Alexander Atsennaienton Ransom at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating. Alex predeceased her on August 28, 1995.

Margaret first worked as a housekeeper at the Highland Hotel before beginning her working career at the St. Regis Mohawk School, working there until her retirement after 20 years of service. She was an active communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens. Margaret was fluent in theMohawk language and was a talented basket maker. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and selling her goods at the family farm. In addition, she enjoyed playing Tuesday night Radio Bingo and playing the harmonica.

Margaret is survived by her seven children, Angus Ransom, Ivan and Delores Ransom, Joyce, Patricia, and Betty Ransom, all of Akwesasne; Harold Ransom of Lakewood, Colorado; and Phyllis Ransom of New Orleans, Louisiana; 14 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 7 great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Lois Terrance, Hilda Lazore, and Marie Hamilton; and her god daughters, Valerie Francis, and Shirley Swamp.

She was predeceased by four great grandchildren, two sisters, Hattie Lazore and Louise Walker; and three brothers, Jake, Abe, and Basil Lazore of St. Regis, Quebec

Friends may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers, beginning 5:00 PM Thursday until 10:00 AM Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 11:00 AM at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Akwesasne Homemakers or the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.
