A Voice from the Eastern Door

Tattletale

Little brother has turned into a storyteller since his words have become clearer. He loves when strangers understand him and we can see the boost in his self-confidence. He is now all about speaking for himself. When we go out to eat he will now order food himself where before he would whisper it to us and then we would tell the waitress. He now eagerly bounces in his seat as he waits for the waitress to get to him. With a big smile on his face he will say, “for a drink I want a chocolate milk” followed by a giggle and an ear-to-ear grin. That is a big deal for him and us, him being understood. The first time he successfully made an order for himself I could feel the lump in my throat. I was proud and so was he. I find he talks more to people not just his inner circle.

At school they said he has become very outgoing and likes to play jokes and tell jokes. Those he learns from his brother and repeats them. What makes it so funny is how he laughs before the punchlines because he knows what he is going to say. In other aspects he tells his totas and grandma all about his day or what he saw on TV. Not too long ago he tried to lie. I had to have this big talk with him about the importance and power that his words hold. That he can’t lie because it’s wrong and in some cases mean.

What happened was the boys went with my mom one day and when they got home big brother ratted little brother out. Told me about how little brother was trying to get me into trouble with my own mom. As if my mom wouldn’t tell me when she walked in the door. It was funny and infuriating at the same time. Little brother also enjoys telling on anyone and everyone. We could be at the grocery store and little brother will loudly point out, “hey mom that boy over there is picking his nose!” or “hey mom see that kid they aren’t listening!” it can get embarrassing. Sometimes it feels like we are walking around with a sign that reads, ‘attention Wal-Mart shoppers we have a tattletale!’
