A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Veterans Day, the American Legion held a ceremony to honor veterans. Fifty-year member Mary Francis guessed they have been doing the event for close to that many years. The official speech, prayers, color guard and salute was held on Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., the date and time of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. The date was declared a national holiday, Armistice Day, in 1919 by then-President Woodrow Wilson. The holiday was renamed to include all veterans in 1954. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.
Chaplain Pete Sunday began with a prayer and the ceremony was led by 2nd Vice Commander Scott Jock. The ceremony wrapped up with the firing squad and bugler playing "TAPS."
