A Voice from the Eastern Door
Another season in the history books for the Salmon River boys and girls soccer teams. Each team ended with great seasons.
The Lady Shamrocks ended their season in the semi finals on Wednesday, October 30, against top seeded Potsdam where they lost 2-0 at Potsdam. Wraven Sunday made eight saves for the Shamrock (5-13) effort.
"The girls came to play and I was so impressed. It was a tough loss," said Coach Liz Durfee.
Earlier in the week the Lady Shamrocks beat the OFA Blue Devils in the first round of playoffs 1-0, at home to move on to the semi finals.
The first half of the game was scoreless, but after half time the Lady Shamrocks went back on the field ready to work. Salmon River got on the scoreboard with 11:53 left in regulation play when Jaiden Mitchell converted off a pass from Jenna Thompson. It was all that was needed to win the game as the Shamrocks were able to hold off the Lady Blue Devils from scoring and to move on in playoffs.
With the help of the girls, Coach Liz Durfee earned her first career playoff victory. Both teams had chances to score but Salmon ended with its first playoff victory in three seasons.
Second Team All Northern Awards went to Kelby Mitchell and Taylor Francis. The Section 10 All Northern Academic Awards went to Kiera Pyke, Jocelyn Martin and Becca Leroux. Leroux also earned the Section 10 Sportsmanship Award. This year the team will be graduating 10 seniors. Good luck to all the seniors and congratulations to a great season for the whole 2013 girl's soccer team!
The Salmon River boys suffered a disappointing loss against Gouverneur with a score of 1-0. The Shamrocks had beaten the Wildcats a few weeks ago and this win gave Gouverneur its first win of the season. Salmon River ends its season with a 5-11-1 record which has improved from last year's record of 3-10-2.
"Overall I feel that this team exceeded my expectations," stated Coach Ben Barkley. "We controlled the play, outshot our opponent 25-2, made the correct decisions, but failed to put one in the net, and we watched the time trickle away, most kids were in disbelief that the season was over. It was hard to say goodbye to our seniors and to have to end my time with these players. We really had something powerful this year. The future looks bright for Salmon River and I can't wait for next year."
First Team All Northern went to Josh Hynes while Second Team All Northern went to Justin Bigness and Zach Smith. Smith, Chance Monette, Walyon Square and Jordan Bigness earned All Northern Academic Awards while Elden King brought home the Section 10 Sportsmanship Award. Congratulations to the award winners and the whole team for a nicely done season.
