Iakhiié:iare (We Remember Them All) Commemoration on 11/11

On November 11, the Residential School Monument will be moved to the Skahwatsí:ra Tsi Ionteweienstáhkhwa (Kaná:takon School) with a commemoration taking place with guest speakers. The public is invited as well as anyone who was involved in having a monument commissioned in honor of residential school survivors.

It was Kaweienon:ni (Margaret) Peters’ idea to move the bench to the Kaná:takon School. She said, “I would often see the bench at the arena sort of sitting by the wall. Seems strange I know, but I thought it looked lonely and I thought of the kids who’d been at the school, away from their family, their community and that’s how they must’ve felt. So I set out to see if we could have it brought to the Kaná:takon School where it would sit as a reminder to our children that their past relatives were once forbidden to speak the language and today, we are doing all we can to pass the gift of the language back onto to them. The monument will sit as a daily reminder to everyone that though they may have tried to break our spirits and take away our language, it is alive and well and being passed onto the future generations.”

Guest speakers include Tom Porter, Eddie Gray, MCA leadership and several others to speak on behalf of the survivors and the reason for having the monument commissioned in their honor.

Dinner to begin at 6:00 pm with presentations to follow.
