A Voice from the Eastern Door

We never knew...

By Sesi King

The late Anna Swamp Johnson, Summerville, Pa. displayed her skill at archery hunting at the Keystone Park as a young woman. She was the first woman to be recorded killing a deer during that special season in 1952 with a sure shot of her bow.

Anna was the sister to the late Leo Swamp, Catherine Swamp Cook, late Lena Swamp Cantatore, Grace Swamp Chubb, and Peter Back. Her husband was William Johnson of Summerville and their children who still reside in that area are: Raeann Miller (Bob), Howard Johnson and David Johnson (Laurie). Back then, archery was regarded as a bow and arrow game preceded by the hunters who used the bow and arrow as a tool to survive to gather their seasonal feed. Nowadays archery is not a necessity but more for outdoor sport.
