ROOSEVELTOWN – Rosemary H. Leonard, 85, of 419 Roosevelt Road, passed away this morning, Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at the Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since Saturday, surrounded by her loving family. She had been in failing health for the past 3 months.
Rosemary was born August 4, 1928, in Rome, NY, daughter of the late Richard J. and Rose M. Derouchie Hartigan. She attended Waddington and Massena Schools. On October 30, 1946 she married Roy F. Leonard at the Church of the Sacred Heart, with Father Jarecki officiating. Roy predeceased her on July 12, 1994.
She first worked for Newberry’s in Massena for seven years, then at Sears and Roebuck in Syracuse for one year, then Leonard’s Store, in the curtain department, then as a seamstress for the Cooper Drapery company for 24 years, and as a supervisor, retiring in 1990. Rosemary then went back to work in 1998 at Caraway Cleaners in Syracuse until returning to Massena in 2006. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, and reading.
Rosemary is survived by her sisters, Harriet Lamay, Massena; Winona Weaver, Alabama; and Ann and Gary Durant, Massena; and a brother Thomas and Gladys Hartigan, Brasher Falls. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins.
She is predeceased by her only son, Edward R. Leonard, on October 10, 2009; and four brothers, James in infancy, Edward W. on August 6, 1995, Richard C. on March 24, 2001, and John I. on July 26, 2002
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home on Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, at 12:00 noon at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Massena, with Father Donald J. Manfred celebrating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Massena.
