A Voice from the Eastern Door

Kanatakon School Hosts week full of Visitors

The Kanatakon School had lots of visitors last week. On Wednesday morning, students got to spend some time outside to learn how to wash corn. Chester Thompson from Kanenhsto:hare went through the process step by step for the children.

On Thursday, the children had a meal of corn soup and fried bread. The soup was made with the corn they had washed the day before. A social was held after the meal.

On Thursday the school also had visitors from Manitoba. School staff from the Wanipigow School, which is in the Frontier School Division from the Hollow Water First Nation, were visiting. They have started an Ojibwe immersion school and were learning strategies to incorporate cultural components.

The ladies explained how they share a similar history and have an endangered language. They said they are always trying to expand their knowledge for immersion strategies, and the best way to do that is to witness it. They were here to “see how we can follow in their ways, so our kids will not only know their language, but also their identity.”
