The Massena varsity girls volleyball team came from behind to pull down a home win on Wednesday, Sept. 18 taking down the Salmon River Shamrocks.
The Raiders managed a 27 – 25 come-from-behind victory in the first set, but their green-clad opponents took over the next two sets 25-14, 25-17.
Massena got back on their feet in the fourth set, coming out ahead 25 points to the Shamrocks’ 19, and rallied to win in set number five by two points, 27 – 25.
Krista Loran racked up 18 points and 11 kills for the Raider contingent. Jacalyn Lamica garnered 24 sets, 16 points, and nine assists. Squadmate Madeline Thibault notched 14 points, including three aces. Samantha Villnave lodged nine points and six kills.
The Massena Central varsity boy’s soccer team blanked the Potsdam Sandstoners at home on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Jason Hammill opened up the scoreboard with assist from Dylan Stone 31:18 into the first half. The game would stay scoreless for almost another 40 minutes when Forrest Brockway found the back of Potsdam’s net with an assist from Tyler Young. With less than three minutes to go, Evan Kassian raised the score to 3 – 0 with an assist from Stone, his second of the day.
Massena’s Cameron Marsh stopped all 10 shots booted his way. Ashler Herrick and Jack Burns each spent time manning the Sandstoner net, garnering five saves each.
The Massena swim team fell to the Canton Golden Bears 60 – 34 in their home waters on Friday, Sept. 20.
Massena’s Baylee Carroll took home Massena’s lone first-place finish of the day, completing the 100-meter freestyle in 1:02.27. Canton’s closest finisher was Breda McCormick in second place with 1:04.32.
Carroll almost bested Canton’s Dasha LaPoint in the 50-meter freestyle – the Lady Raider finished in 27.73 seconds to her opponent’s 27.18.
Massena’s Allison Dix was barely denied first place in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing in 1:13.71 to Canton’s Rachael Huntley in 1:13.22.
