A Voice from the Eastern Door
September 17, 2013
Dear Parents:
We began the school year with many new changes. As you may be aware, the Salmon River Central School District has implemented new curriculum in grades Pre-kindergarten through 5.
We will be utilizing the New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Math modules.
The ELA and Math modules are very different than the curriculum that we have been using in the past. The focus of the modules is to prepare students for Regents Exams in High School and to be prepared for college.
It is extremely important that you set a daily routine for your child to complete their homework.
Homework will look very different this year as the modules are designed to challenge your child’s ability to apply what was taught in the classroom. I strongly encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher. The modules are very different and you will need to work closely with your child’s teacher to understand the changes in curriculum to help your child be successful.
Also, be aware that the assessments that are given at the beginning of the year have changed.
Students are now required to be proficient at reading text at 96% accuracy. This means your child must be able to read leveled text with fewer than 4 errors. This change may lower your child’s Running Record level from last year. Again, I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns.
I will update you with information as we continue to adjust to the drastic changes in education brought about by the New York State Education Department. Now more than ever, it is imperative you become an active participant in your child’s academic success.
Please do not hesitate in contacting me with any questions or concerns at 518-358-2763 or via email at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Sharlee Thomas
