A Voice from the Eastern Door
SESKÉHA/AUGUST 2013
The Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education (AMBE) believes that it is important for community members to pursue post secondary education opportunities. Post secondary education will allow community members to secure better paying jobs and to provide services and expertise to Akwesasne and neighbouring areas. It is the desire of both the AMBE and the community to provide for and enter into self-government, self-reliance and independence in planning and action. This requires well-educated and thoroughly trained citizens. The Post Secondary Administrator is authorized to establish and implement administrative procedures on behalf of AMBE. These procedures are necessary to the performance and achievement of the goals and objectives of the program.
CHANGES - APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The student must make every effort to apply in person with the Post-Secondary Administrator to ensure that all of the application procedures listed are fully completed. In the past, incomplete applications were accepted with the understanding that the remaining documents will be handed in at a later date. This will no longer be accepted. All documents must be submitted by the approved deadline for the student to be eligible for funding.
CHANGES - TYPES OF ASSISTANCE
• Living expenses are provided for full-time students only. Students enrolled in online courses will no longer be sponsored. Funding for students currently taking online courses will be continuing only until they graduate from the program.
• All monthly travel allowances will be eliminated and provided only to commuting students who qualify (i.e. Ottawa). Students who qualify will receive $200/semester.
• Parking fees will no longer be reimbursed.
• Students enrolled in a private vocational training centre in Canada (i.e. Academy of Learning) will no longer be sponsored. Students already enrolled at a vocational training centre will only be sponsored until they graduate from the program they are currently in.
• Summer course funding will no longer be provided.
CHANGES - MONTHLY ALLOWANCES

A complete copy of the Administrative Guidelines is available on the website (www.ambe.ca) or at the Board Office. For any further information on the Post Secondary Assistance Program contact Norma Sunday, Post Secondary Administrator at 613-933-0409.
Request for a Grievance Hearing: If the student does not agree with the decision of the Post Secondary Administrator and the Director of Education, the student has the right to appeal. At the written request of the student to the Director of Education, a meeting of the Grievance Committee will convene within 10 working days (revised 1998).
Grievance Committee: A Grievance Committee will be established by the Board of Education. The Committee will consist of three members of the Board of Education, not related to the person or issue in question. The student may select a Chief or advisor of their choice to represent them in the hearing/grievance. It is recommended that the person with the grievance be present at the hearing. The Post-Secondary Administrator will act on the recommendations of the Grievance Committee.
