A Voice from the Eastern Door
CKON Radio is ready to kick off Labor Day weekend with a Loyal Listener’s Appreciation Day to be held at the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department on Route 37 in Akwesasne on Saturday, August 31. The festivities are scheduled to begin at noon and run through 4 p.m. beginning with a live performance by Oshier Country at noon followed by the Haudenosaunee Youth Cultural Group Fancy & Hoop Dancers at 1 p.m. The afternoon continues with live performances by Bobby Herne and the Country Rollers, Crosswinds (John Francis) and the River Mohawks. The day includes over 20 on-site vendors from beaded crafts, to jewelry, Native accessories, Haudenosaunee artwork and pottery, K&H Sports Memorabilia and more. The Jurassic Park bouncy house will be available to entertain the children as well as Belly Buttons the Clown who will be doing face painting and creating animal shapes from balloons. Martin’s Fish Preserve will be onsite to sell ice cream and provide fishing for the youth. There is fun for everyone.
“We want to show our loyal listener’s how much we appreciate them,” says Reen Cook. Showing appreciation is important as CKON has had to forego live broadcasting several times this summer due to equipment repairs. In early summer, CKON was hit with a major tower equipment failure that resulted in the station being off the air for a week. “While the station was off the air many of our listener’s called to find out what was wrong and it was through these calls that we learned about how many people rely on CKON to get their information,” said Larry “The Eagle” Edwards who does the Eagle in the Morning show with Reen Cook. “It was really nice to hear from listeners all around our area that were concerned enough to call and ask why they couldn’t tune into our station,” said Barbara Smoke, Receptionist.
The Appreciation day will have CKON promotional items to give away along with a raffle to win $973 dollars in cash. Other raffles could win you free breakfasts for one year at Bear’s Den, one year of a monthly fill-up of gasoline from Twin Leaf, gas cards from AK Gas, a $500 Gift Certificate from T-19 Sports, a carved Hair Comb from Michael Laughing Sr., gift certificates from Rocket Ronnie’s and Golden Fries, $973 of free heating fuel from Truck Stop #9, one free movie night by D&T’s Outdoor Cinema, and an IPod & Designer handbag from Dr. Navaneelan’s Dental Clinic. The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino is offering a one night’s stay at their hotel with a $50 voucher and Swamps Performance has a car care package up for grabs. Food vendors are a must at any event and the Firemen will be selling their famous chicken meal. Hotdogs, chips and water will be provided free at the Akwesasne Child and Family Services Mobile Fun Van. The Chocolate Chicks, Divalissa and Johanne Jackson’s Strawberry Shortcake are sure to tempt anybody’s palate so don’t be shy about sampling their exquisite delicacies.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the Appreciation Day. There is no cost to participate - so come and enjoy Saturday afternoon with CKON Radio and mingle with the staff that provides you with a live and local radio station.
Parking for the Appreciation Day will be at the former IGA parking lot. Event attendees are asked to please enter and exit the IGA parking lot at the traffic light. The CKON van will be available to transport elders and others who cannot navigate the field between the IGA and the Fire Department. We ask that the vendors also park at the IGA parking lot after unloading as the fire department driveway must not be blocked in case of a fire call.
