A Voice from the Eastern Door
Autistic teen target of vicious letter
A hateful letter was sent last Friday in Newcastle, Ontario to a grandmother of a teenager with autism. The letter said that the grandmother should move or euthanize him.
The letter begins with complaints about the boy’s noises in the backyard because “it scares the hell out of my normal children.”
The letter continues with more disgusting comments…
This letter prompted at least a hundred people from the neighbourhood to come together and show their support to the boy and his family.
Actions such as these are unacceptable, but open up an important dialogue. The prevalence rates are 1 in 94 with approximately 100,000 individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in Ontario.
This is one of the reasons that we need more awareness in the community. Autism Ontario continues to provide information to the public, including professionals in the medical, educational and vocational fields so they can effectively work and support individuals and families touched by ASD.
