A Voice from the Eastern Door
The 2013 Louie E. King Softball Tournament was held over the weekend at the Louie E. King Ballfield behind the American Legion Post in Akwesasne. The purpose of the tournament is to raise funds for college bound high school graduates and consists of a $200 award. The tournament is a two day competition and has 8 teams who pay a $250 entry fee, which goes towards the scholarships. Being a coed tournament, there is a 4 girl on the field rule at all times. There were prizes for the winning teams of $1000 for first place, $600 for second, and $400 for third.
The scholarships were awarded after the end of the tournament and this year marked a high point in scholarships awarded. Although several scholarships were awarded this year, it will return to two students from each of three area high schools next year. The winners of the scholarships are drawn randomly.
This year marks the first year that the children and grandchildren have taken over the tournament from the older generation. This is one of the longest running annual tournaments of its kind in the area, missing a year or two but still going strong. Next year, there are plans to hold the tournament over the July 4th weekend.
Cassie Garrow wanted to thank “Mike Loran at Signs & Stitches for donating our advertising posters for the tournament. Also, the umpires that helped us out throughout the tournament were Steve Conners, Jimmy “McDuck”, Ross Driscoll, Landon Mitchell, Pat Phillips, Matt Thompson, Landon Mitchell & Tony Lafrance.”
