A Voice from the Eastern Door
The talent show at the Franklin County Fair proved to be fruitful for Akwesasne. Brandon Gambill took third place for singing in the 19+ age category and Raylynn Sunday took first place for hoop dancing in the 14-18 age category.
The talent show started with an elimination round where three judges only let six competitors into the finals. There were three age groups: an under 13, a 14-18 and a 19 and up.
Raylynn Sunday is 14 years old and has been hoop dancing for about 4 years. She took classes to start, but isn’t currently in any. Raylynn has entered one talent show before, but that was with a group of hoop dancers. She has never danced alone and she said she entered the contest to build her confidence. About winning, she said it all when she said it was “awesome.” Well I’m sure first place has certainly boosted your confidence Raylynn, great job!
Brandon Gambill is 19 and has been singing since he was about six years old. He has entered lots of contests and even opened up for George Thorogood when he was in Akwesasne, singing Lonestar’s “Amazed.” Along with taking third in Franklin County, Brandon also entered the talent show in the Gouverneur Fair. That contest landed him a spot in the Talent Showcase at the Great NYS Fair where he will compete with hundreds. Brandon said, “I enjoy singing. I’m excited to perform any chance I get and I’m excited to go to the fair.” Great job, and good luck at the State Fair, Brandon!
