A Voice from the Eastern Door
Health and Wellness were the theme at this year’s Wellness Day at the Senior’s Center in Hogansburg.
Thursday’s event featured many departments from within the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. There was information about leading a healthy lifestyle as well as the environment, and other services in the community and outside.
The event was organized by Deylin Jacobs and Lacey Peters, with help from Craig Fuller from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Resort, who donated all the food for the free barbeque lunch. This year’s event featured Ty Thompson signing autographs for fans, an inflatable obstacle course and then a bounce house, free massages from the Spa at AMC, and loads of door prizes, handouts and promotional swag given away. Inside the Seniors Center were more information booths, a child ID station, and a blood drive.
Different this year was that a registration was held, and from that information the organizers of the event learned that at least 470 people attended, not including those who skipped registration. One of the biggest turnouts for the event so far!
The winners of the grand prizes at Wellness Day were:
Kayak 1-Henrik Campeau
Kayak 2-Jack Kolby
Waterslide- Rebecca Pomainville
Spa Package from Casino Spa-Stacee Loran
And the bingo package winners-Ness David, Elaine Castor, and Valerie Terrance.
Deylin Jacobs offered her thanks: “On behalf of the Health Promotion Disease and Injury Prevention Program also known as HPDP we would like to thank the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, the Community Partnership Program, CKON, Indian Time Newspaper, and also a special thanks to Ty Thompson for making an appearance at the Wellness Day this year to sign autographs, also to be there for the children to see the celebrity himself. We would also like to thank all the programs and vendors who participated, you all helped to make this year’s Wellness Day a great success! We hope to see everyone again next year around the same time!”
