A Voice from the Eastern Door

Farmer's Market at Akwesasne!

Submitted by Elvera Sargent

Kanenhi:io Ionkwaiontonhakie held it’s first Farmer’s Market of the season, today, Sunday, July 7th from 10 am to 2 pm. The Farmer’s Market is located on Route 37 on the eastern end of Akwesasne – at the purple and while greenhouse. Despite the rain we had a good time visiting with friends and supporters with the following line up for our “Opening Day.”

Homemade jams by Totamom Lazore: In addition to her strawberry jam from local farmers there was also wild blueberry jam that came from up northern Quebec.

Akwesasne Puppy Style Dog Biscuits: Homemade dog treats - no corn, soy, wheat or preservatives.

Kanenhi:io Ionkwaiontonhakie had fresh organically grown lettuce, peas – “Onekwa,” cilantro, basil, beets, multi colored lettuce, delicious pumpkin pie, homemade lavender mist to ease stress, and salsa.

For lunch rice, beans, chips with homemade salsa, and a garden salad with herbal dressing, was available for $7.00!

Kanenhi:io Iokwaiontonhakie is inviting all community members to support sustainable agriculture and together we can work towards ensuring a safe, local and reliable food supply for all of Akwesasne. Some good reasons to buy local, organically grown produce: it tastes so good because the produce is picked when it is ripe and ready to eat without travelling hundreds of miles. You will see how it is grown and will meet the pickers. It supports food sovereignty! Food sovereignty is the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.

The next Farmer’s Market will be held next Sunday, July 14th, 2013 from 10 am to 2 pm, we invite you to come and check it out. For further info contact: 315-705-7165 or Facebook at group page at Kanenhiio Ionkwaiontonhakie, niawen ko:wa!
