AKWESASNE – Mr. Richard “Tahake” Peters, age 87, of 144 White Road, passed away late Thursday evening June 27, 2013, at the Franklin County Nursing Home, Malone.
Tahake was born September 1, 1925 in Snye, Quebec the son of the late Mitchell and Agatha Mitchell Peters of Kawenoke. He attended schools in Kawenoke and received his high school diploma through Operation Recognition for World War II Veterans. On September 17, 1943, he entered the US Navy, where he served until his honorable discharge on April 12, 1946. While in the Navy, he served on the SS George T. Angell, SS Augustine Heard, the SS Churubusco, and the SS A.P.Hill. On Thanksgiving Day 1947, he married Ella R. White at the Hoganburg Methodist Church. She predeceased him on May 9, 2000.
Richard was an ironworker with Local #440 in Utica, retiring in 1990. He was an active member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479, the St. Regis Mohawk Senior Citizens, and a life member of the Cedarview Golf and Country Club where he loved to golf.
He is survived by his two daughters, Lynn Jacobs of Akwesasne, NY; and Kerry and Ernie Mitchell of Akwesasne, Ontario; his grandchildren, Noel White, Derek Jacobs, Lauren, Kora, and Robert Mitchell; his great grandchildren, Demi, Richard, Kaelum, Joseph, Ryan, and Emerson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Verna Loran, Theresa Sunday, Betty Laughing and seven additional siblings.
Friends called starting Monday, July 1st at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at a time to be announced at the American Legion in Hogansburg.
