Elizabeth Hopps "Kawisenhawe"

AKWESASNE – Ms. Elizabeth “Kawisenhawe” Hopps, age 92, of 1195 Island Road, Cornwall Island, passed away after a short illness in the comfort of her home with her loving family by her side on Thursday morning, June 27, 2013.

Elizabeth was born October 22, 1922 on Cornwall Island, the daughter of the late Mitchell and Mary Point Hopps. She attended schools on Cornwall Island and worked on the family farm for many years. She also was a sewer for the Malone Slipper Factory at one time.

Kawisenhawe was a Wolf Clan mother for 74 years watching the title of “Orenhe’ko:wa”. She stood up 3 chiefs in her time. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, spending time with her “grandchildren.”

She is survived by her chosen daughter, Julia Seymour Jacobs of Akwesasne and many nieces and nephews.

Kawisenhawe was predeceased by three sisters, Anna Hopps, November 15, 1989; Marion Seymour on November 17, 2003; Harriet Thompson on January 2, 1992; and two brothers, Phillip Hopps on July 10, 1985 and Noah Hopps on March 10, 1985; and a chosen son, Lawrence Gordon Seymour on December 5, 1965.

Friends called at her home beginning Friday, June 28th until a Funeral services on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse. Burial followed in the Mohawk Nation Longhouse Cemetery, Cornwall Island.
