A Voice from the Eastern Door

Fifty-five Salmon River eighth graders visited Boston, Massachusetts from May 8-10, where they enjoyed a wealth of fun and educational experiences. Students visited the New England Aquarium, where they also enjoyed an IMAX Movie, as well as the Museum of Science. From there, they boarded the famous Guided Sightseeing Duck Tour, which travels by land and water around the city. In addition, students spent time in the beautiful Quincy Market where they shopped and sampled New England favorites. On the last day of the trip students visited the House of Seven Gables and the Salem Witch Museum in historic Salem, just outside of Boston.
In preparation for the trip, students did multiple fundraisers including a pasta dinner, selling t-shirts, RADA Cutlery and a Schwan’s fundraiser. Students have also done bottle drives, change drives, quilt raffles, and many other events to raise money.
In addition to fundraising, community members and businesses have also donated to the cause. Tarbell Management Group and Leroux Oil made big donations this year. In the past, businesses have also sponsored students that could not afford the expense.
Lastly, the class officers had to deliver a presentation to the Board of Education requesting permission to go on the trip. They wrote a script, and rehearsed the presentation beforehand. It was a wonderful experience in writing and public speaking.
Both students and adults thoroughly enjoyed the trip and thank all who made it possible.
