Community of Akwesasne
We have had such a disaster at our new senior center in Hogansburg. It didn’t affect some of us, but it sure did to a lot of our elders that come to the center everyday. These elders depend on this hot lunch, and now they’re getting a bag lunch.
In this whole community, didn’t anybody look into other options to be able to feed our elders properly? Look at the food that’s prepared everyday at the casino. It could be prepared and served at another place, like the fire station or Kateri Hall. Fort Covington has a senior center or trips could be taken to other centers around the reserve. After all, they are supported by the casino.
Bingo games could be held at the fire station. This is what the elders like to do. Where does honoring the elders come in? The only time the elders get mentioned is when they need votes, at elections. Sitting around in offices is not the thing to do for our elders; you were hired to give service to the elders of our community.
Food for thought.
