PSC LOOKING AT NEW AREA CODE WITHIN 315
The New York State Public Service Commission is revisiting a plan to “overlay” or create a new area code within the current 315 area-code territory that, according to the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), is nearing capacity. Currently, the 315 area code services 18 northern and central New York counties. The PSC estimates that it will be out of phone numbers by early 2015. The commission originally explored the idea of a new area code in 2007 and came up with the overlay area code idea in 2008. The idea was temporarily shelved when new calculations from NANPA indicated that 315 could survive the explosion in cell phone number requests for a few more years.
Currently the PSC has a proposal that calls for an overlay, in which a new area code will be added on top of 315, putting two area codes in the same territory. Customers in both area codes would have to dial all 10 digits, even for local calls. The public comment period on the proposal runs through July 15. Comments may be submitted to the Secretary by e-filing through the Department’s Document and Matter Management System (DMM), or by e-mail to the Secretary at [email protected], on or before July 15, 2013. Those unable to file electronically may mail or deliver their comments to the Hon. Jeffrey C. Cohen, Acting Secretary, New York State Public Service Commission, Three Empire State Plaza, Albany, New York, 12223-1350. All comments submitted to the Secretary will be posted on the Commission’s Web site and become part of the official case record.
ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY SHERIFF WARNS OF PHONE SCAMMERS
Story from North Country Now
Canton, NY - St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells warned residents of an ongoing phone scam. In a release issued Tuesday Wells said residents throughout the county have reported receiving phone calls in which the scammer pretended to represent the Sheriff’s Office and demanded money for phone calls made from inmates.
The calls have been received from 866-847-1251. A call to that number led to maze of redirections.
Wells said his office will never contact individuals to make payments for inmates.
“These are not legitimate calls,” Wells said in the release. “Please disregard them and you can report any issues to 379-2222.”
