AKWESASNE – Mr. Joseph Johnson, age 75, of 77 Hilltop Drive, St. Regis, peacefully passed away Friday morning, June 14, 2013 at his home. He had been in failing health for the past 4 years.
Joe was born October 19, 1937 on Cornwall Island, the son of the late Peter Michael and Louise Foote Johnson. He attended Mohawk schools. On May 6, 1961, Joe married Mary M. Diabo at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating.
Joe was an ironworker with Local #823 in Montreal and Ottawa, retiring in 2005. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry work, gardening, and watching lacrosse and hockey.
He is survived by loving wife, Mary; his children, Timothy Johnson of St. Regis; Kathleen David of St. Regis; Kimberly Johnson of Cornwall Island; Peter Johnson of St. Regis; and Kenneth and Diane Johnson of St. Regis; 14 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by 2 daughters, Sharron M. Johnson on December 5, 1993 and Bonnie Johnson Rojek on March 22, 1996; two granddaughters, Amanda Johnson on March 26, 1986; Ashley Rose Johnson on April 14, 1989; a grandson, Jeremy David on March 27, 2001; and his siblings, Mitchell, William, Richard, Silas, Frank, Louie, Rita and Cecelia Johnson, Mary Johnson Sawatis, and Catherine Gushlaw Rowe.
Friends called at his home beginning Saturday, June 15th until a Mass of Christian Burial on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the St. Regis Catholic Church, with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating. Following cremation, burial will be in Kateri Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
