AMPS Holds Situational Based Training for High School Students

On Thursday, June 6, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service held a situational based training which resembles a ride-along. The situation was two calls, which were staged to represent real crimes that officers see. Due to insurance concerns, students are not allowed to attend real calls, and this situational based training presented the next best thing. The purpose of the event was to give students interested in law enforcement a look into what real officers see by going on patrol with an officer, and get a two hour life experience into what a police officer really does. This is the third year that this program has run.

Two students from CCVS, Miles Delormier and Ronnie Robidoux, each attended calls. The first was a graffiti call, which the students saw as a less glamorous call, and investigated the scene. While on the calls the officers accompanying the students provided guidance about the questions they are going to want to ask, and what they are going to look for.

The second call was at the Anowara’kowa Arena. At the Arena, the office was open and the room was upturned, with the belongings strewn about. Cheyenne Jacco was the one who made the call and was interviewed by the students. Each student questioned her about the circumstances surrounding the call, and while writing down the pertinent info, Officers Peter Lafrance and Cody Thompson guided the students on the questions they should be asking, as well as why. Following the questioning, Officer Lafrance described the process by which a forensics officer would arrive, and the information they would need, as well as what the first officers on the scenes responsibilities are.

Cody Thompson told the students, “Gather as much information as you can to paint a picture.” Peter Lafrance said, “It’s a lot of work, and a lot of writing.”

Rob White told the students, “This is what an officer goes through everyday. You may come on and there is a dog call, a breaking and entering and an assault, and all of these things are going on at the same time. ”
